Yesterday, Éiden spent most of the day making a Giant Tiger out of paper. He first cut out all the pieces of paper he needed, then I helped him assemble it and drew a few lines so he could color stripes ("I'm not very good at doing that," he said, by way of explanation for why he wanted them). The rest was all him -- the coloring, the cutting, the drawing, and the plans. Here's the result:

Unfortunately, though it's the first "real" thing he's made (i. e. it looks like what it's supposed to be and isn't just a bunch of scribbles), he made it for his friend at school, and, no matter how much I or [livejournal.com profile] haddayr tried to convince, he would not let us keep it, nor would he give it to anyone in the family (not even the big brother who he worships and adores). "Weeeeeellllll, no," was his response to each new suggested recipient.

So, this morning, we bid adieu to the Giant Tiger, and Éiden brought it in to school and gave it to his friend.

I love it. Especially the teeth.

He wanted it to have a "scary mouth."

He was super-proud of himself. He carried it around all evening and only put it down during dinner.

It kills me that he gave it away, though it was very sweet of him.

That is a gorgeous tiger. Maybe he'll make more, since the first one turned out so nicely!

He says he's going to make a man next, or a robot. We'll see if he makes a tiger again.

Awesome.

When my son, Dale, was a teenager, he drew these fantastical creatures. A mix of real and surreal that I loved. He gave his artwork away to teachers, friends, potential girl friends. I didn't even get a picture of them.

That sounds like something I would have done when I was a teenager, not even thinking that my mother would have cared about any of it.

My favorite part of this whole thing is the "Weeeeeellllll, no,"
by the way, he is looking positively ancient!

It's especially cute (and fun to imitate) with his personal Éiden-world accent.

Maybe it has to do with the fact that I'm a huge Auburn football fan, but my oldest boy's had a thing for Tigers lately.

That's a nice looking tiger. At least you got to get a picture before he gave it away.

Éiden's had a thing for tigers for some time, now. He even pretends to be Super Tiger. His older brother really liked tigers for a time, as well. Maybe it's the color scheme or something.
