because racism stereotyped black men as more “masculine” for so long that some white men find their presence to be masculinity-affirming (as long as there aren’t too many of them)  [emphasis added]

Which masculinity-affirming stereotype would that be?  The one of the scary black thug who's out to get white women and beat up their men?  Or maybe it's the non-threatening black sidekick who I see hanging out with his group of white friends in sitcoms and ads about prostate health?

It was line from a longer piece where Steinem, at one point, describes why black men are more privileged in our society than white women (and then says she doesn't want to get into an argument of who has it worse).
