If a parent asks someone to pick something up and a child is there to hear it, does the parent make a sound?

Yes, but apparently one without directed meaning. Kind of like a grunt.

I suspect that, at least in this house, there is no sound because the kids continue on with their business without once looking up.

I'm pretty sure there is no sound. Sometimies, if you repeat it over and over, the sentences overlap and build up to the point that a child may briefly notice that you seem irritated about something and may perhaps find that amusing.
