Really, I can't complain
Oct. 19th, 2008 10:45 pmBut I'm going to anyway. You know, I'd accepted the fact that the Red Sox weren't going to the World Series back in the regular season. I had willingly accepted that the Angels would be representing the American League this year and I was fine with that. Then the Red Sox had to go and knock the Angels out in the Division Series. And then, just to make sure I thought "well maybe they do have a chance, they went and beat the Rays in the first game of the ALCS.
By the time the series reached Game 5, though, and the Rays had a 7-0 lead in the seventh inning, I was back to being perfectly fine with the fact that this just wasn't the Red Sox' year. Really, I was ok with that. I sat listening to the game, waiting for the final out, and then the fuckers had to come back and win the game. Biggest postseason comeback since 1929. Well, they do that, and now I'm back in it, feeling invested. So they win Game 6 yesterday, and now I'm feeling really invested in wanting them to win.
So I listen to the game tonight and I listen as they first take a lead and then do nothing the rest of the night. I mean nothin. Even when the Sox got their lead-off men on in the last two innings they could do shit. And in the meantime, the Rays have built a 3-1 lead that feels just as big as 10-1. Goddamn Red Sox.
So the Red Sox aren't going to the World Series -- a fact I'd accepted long ago back in August. Only the damn Red Sox just couldn't let me be happy with that acceptance, they had to get my hopes up only to dash them once again. Like I said, I really shouldn't complain. They've won two World Series titles since 2004 when most teams haven't even won one in that time, so it's not like Boston fans are hurting like we were four years ago. And the Rays, despite the fact that they really didn't have any fans to speak of before last month, are a feel-good story in baseball. They won the division outright and they're the better team. ANd they're going to the World Series for the first time. I'm fine with that. Really. I just wish the Red Sox didn't have to make it a point to rip my heart out on the way to that inevitability.
(By the way, how much you wanna bet the Sox don't make a hard run after Jake Peavy now)

The Padres have announced they'll start taking offers for him. He has a full no-trade claase and would prefer to stay in the NL and will more than likely cost a lot in terms of prospects. But, he's relatively young, experienced and more than likely this off-season's Santana.
