A Song That Makes Me Laugh

It helps that each time I hear this song I can always picture a tiny Stonehenge monument in danger of being crushed by a dwarf. However, even if it were not from one of the best scenes in Spinal Tap, "Stonehenge" would still be just as wonderfully hilarious with lines like "Where the dew drops cry, and the cats meow," and that absurd Derek Smalls' scream. In less than three minutes it captures everything that is ridiculous and wonderful about heavy metal.

A small note - when driving across the Southwest solo - DO NOT include Spinal Tap in the CD mix - UNLESS you want to laugh hysterically at all of the other classic rock music you've brought along to listen to...

Depending on the band, I sometimes have a hard time not laughing at classic rock on the radio even without having recently heard Spinal Tap (ELO, for one, or Boston, Journey, Foreigner . . .)

There's a band in Minneapolis called ELNo. They were enormous white-boy afro wigs and play nothing but ELO covers. They're pretty funny. We also had a local band called REO Speeddealer. They did all originals. I never heard them, but I liked the name.

There was a period in high school where I went to great pains to avoid ever hearing the radio. To do so was like a fate worse than death. Still, there were certain bands that seeped through anyway in spite of my best efforts.

My wife and I still reference that scene with the dwarf kicking over the mini Stonehenge when the opportunity arises.

That and the record reviews I think are my two favorite parts of that movie.
