A few weeks ago, we noticed a mouse just outside our house, running around our deck as we ate dinner on it. Over the next few days, the mouse would return, more than likely scrounging whatever food the boys dropped. Yesterday, we found the mouse inside our house (I'm assuming it's the same one). It's run up and down the basement stairs and into the guest room. This morning, I heard a scuffling sound in the kitchen and when I looked to see what it was, it was the mouse, squeezing underneath our stove. Where was the cat? About a foot or two away -- calmly, yet somewhat disinterestedly, watching the mouse.

Don't assume it's the same one -- mice often travel in packs and can be quite dangerous when cornered. They'll cut a bitch.

If you want to get the mouse out of your house before it raises a family there: we've had good success with these little mousetraps, I don't know what they're called, but they're dark brown plastic rectangles, just wide and long enough for a mouse to walk into. When mice show up, we put out a couple of those and the mice get captured pretty quickly, and then we release them into the wild.

I got one of them today (with a conventional mousetrap). Éiden says he saw one downstairs afterwards so we have at least one more (and we've got more traps down there as well).

The cat knows it's expected to do... something... but it's trying to cover up the embarrassing fact that it doesn't actually know what to do with the mouse when it catches it.

The maddening thing about the cat is that it's caught plenty of mice before (as I've stepped in their bloody carcasses during the night on several occasions). We got one mouse today (with a trap). I'm still keeping the traps set, though, and looking for more.
