Delta Spirit: Ode to Sunshine
Swinging out like a sweet singing gospel soul choir, Delta Spirit has but one question to ask their listeners: Are you a Believer? Holed up in a mountain cabin on the outskirts of San Diego, this five piece has imbibed the spirits of a who-gives-a-fuck Replacements at their best and channeled the essence of the Exile-era Stones, Ray Davies, Bob Dylan, the Beatles, a little Faces and just about any other band you can think of. The resulting cocktail sounds simultaneously like all of these influences and none of them. Delta Spirit strings you along from skiffles to rockers to folkers to rave ups and onward, preaching their gospel of rock and roll demanding you to answer them. Am I a Believer? The only answer I can give is an emphatic yes.
Book
Popeye: Let's You and Him Fight, vol. 3
So you thinks you knows Popeye? He's the guy with the spinach can who always fights Bluto and has the silly laugh, right? Let me tell you, if you've never read E. C. Segar's Popeye, you know next to nothing about the one-eyed half-pint skipper. Segar's Popeye sings with a life and humaniky that far surpasses that of his animated counterpart. Full of bad puns, slapstick humor and Popeye's penchant for distorting the English langwich, Segar deftly wove daily gags into his adventure stories, telling tales of treasure hunting, sprize fighting, and orphink saving. The best comic strip ever? I sez it is!
Show
X at the Cabooze in Minneapolis
No, they haven't put out anything worthwhile in near thirty years and they still play nothing but material off their first four albums but, damn, can that band rock. Nothing new here, just the same-old same-old: John Doe and Exene harmonizing while Billy Zoom flashes his creepy grin at anyone he can make eye contact with and D. J. Bonebrake propels the music along with his beat. Still, they put on one of the best shows I've seen in years and, for good or bad, I left feeling like I was fifteen again.
