I love Tim McCarver!
Oct. 25th, 2007 09:51 amYou know, everyone claims to hate Tim McCarver but where else would we get the amusement that he brings to a baseball broadcast?
Here's my McCarver gem from last night: "The third base coach is usually in the middle of things because when that runner reaches third, the next stop . . . is home."
Really?
My favorite from the ALCS (complaining about Manny show-boating after home runs): "When Manny Ramirez hits a home run they shouldn't call it a 'walk-off' home run, they should call it a 'walk out' . . . As in 'walk. . . out . . . of the box." Joe Buck greets this observation with silence but McCarver is so amused by his own joke that he can't help laughing at it for the next 30 seconds.
Yes, he's annoying. Yes, he offers almost nothing in terms of analysis. And yes, he quite often (or always) states the obvious. But where else are you going to get such laughable commentary. Really, it's as if Fox hired George Bush as the color guy.
