I volunteered to go with Arie's first grade class to the Minneapolis Children's Theater, today. They were going to see Madeline and the Gypsies. Unfortunately, the play was an hour later than the teacher had initially thought which meant that I had to meet the class there and leave early so I could pick up Éiden from his preschool class.

I waited outside the building for the bus and watched as an orderly line of blue-clad first graders spilled forth when it finally pulled up. Arie was near the back, wearing his blue school t-shirt just like all the other kids in his class. I saw him and smiled and he gave me an awkward look as if to say, "What are you doing here?" even though he expected me to be waiting. I stood at his side and we talked about school and what he'd be doing when he got back. His teacher, Ms. Lander, walked up to us and asked me if Arie had told me how he'd gotten in trouble with her the other day.

"I told him to write down, 'Ms. Lander is my favorite teacher.' And he wouldn't do it!"

"No, I wouldn't," Arie said, laughing.

"Did you think I really got in trouble, first?" he asked after his teacher had gone.

"Yes," I said, smiling.

We walked into the building and waiting until it was time to take our seats. As we waited, Ms. Lander gave Arie the class camera and asked if he wanted to take pictures of the kids waiting. He walked up and down the line, his bright eyes shining out upon each of his subjects as he framed them in the viewfinder, snapped their photo, and then showed them when he was done. I watched him walking up and down the line, breaking my heart with those big beautiful eyes of his.

As we watched the play, Arie sat next to me, I was relaxed as Arie laughed at the antics onstage, not worrying that the laughter would quickly and irrevocably devolve into shrieking hysterical laughing followed by throwing and yelling. It's amazing how different things are with his new medication.

After the intermission, I said goodbye to Arie and, completely on his own, the boy who refused to let me kiss him in front of his bus driver just a couple weeks ago, said goodbye back and gave me a kiss.
