Between the weird caned audience and the overly earnest, head-nodding delivery of Virginia's governor, I half-expected Bob McDonnell to whip out a ShamWow or a Ronco Showtime Rotisserie to see if he could interest us in that while we check out the GOP's health care plan.

GOP presidential material, alas. That really was a strange audience; it felt like an infomercial (with no information, of course).

It really was strange, and the applause seemed so orchestrated as did the weird laughs at his jokes that either weren't funny (like the SportsCenter one) or that weren't jokes (like the invitation to comment on the GOP's health care plan via Facebook or Twitter). I think the thing I was most surprised by, though, was how on PBS neither Brooks nor Shields made any comment about the weirdness and in fact thought we'd see this format for rebuttals form now on.
