Tim Wakefield lost his no-hit bid

The best thing about watching him keep it going as long as he did, though, was the look on his face. He almost never smiles on the mound (like nearly all pitchers) but today, though he did his best to hide it, there was definitely a grin there. He looked like he was having the time of his life. And until the no-hitter finally ended, he was amazing.

I was in the car on my way home from work, having just started listening to the game when Suzuki got his hit. I didn't realize what had happened until about 15 minutes later. (I'm always kind of stunned when I leave work at the end of the day and it takes me awhile to figure out what is going on around me).

I would have loved to have watched that game - and to see Wakefield smile like that. The team really needed a game like that (even a 4 hitter). Hopefully they can get on track now..

I'll bet Grandpa was happy too. (Although he really didn't seem very upset at the losses on the road. I guess the season is too young yet for him to start grumping about how bad the Red Sox are )

Though he said it didn't have any effect on him, I'm sure the 25 minute wait during the top of the eighth had a toll. Up through the seventh, he was unbelievable. He was putting each batter away with only two or three pitches and that knuckler was incredible -- starting up over the batter's head at times and then dropping to his knees as it crossed the plate. When he came out for the bottom of the eighth, though, the pitch just looked different -- a little bit straighter -- and his command wasn't nearly as good. It was a needed win (and break for the bullpen), though I really would have liked to see Wake get the no-hitter. He's been close a few times before.
